What is MAR Coating? The Essential Information

A MAR Coating is something that can truly benefit glasses when applied properly. However, if you’re newly vision-impaired or a recent expat into the world of glasses, you might not be familiar with what it’s capable of. Properly understanding what the coating does is the first step in knowing whether it’s right to your lifestyle.

We’ve put together this blog to expand on what MAR means, so you can determine whether it’s the right purchase to go with your next pair.

What does “MAR coating lenses” mean?

MAR coating stands for Multi-Anti-Reflective coating, meaning it’s a level up from the standard (AR) anti-reflection coating lens treatment. Standard spectacles and sunglasses all have basic AR coatings, generally made up of one or a couple of layers. Advanced MAR coating is created out of multiple layers, with several thin films with carefully controlled thickness levels.

How does it work?

Every layer within an MAR coating is carefully crafted to fight off reflections within different visible wavelengths of light. The multiple layers of films make for highly effective reflection reduction, making for a much more effective tool than simple AR coatings. It can generally be applied to any lens pretty easily, whether for prescription glasses, sunglasses or “just-for-style” specs.

Core benefits of the MAR anti-glare lens coating

Choosing MAR can have pretty profound benefits on your daily life and experience of wearing glasses.

  • Enhanced visual clarity. Minimising reflections from both surface sides of the lenses allows for more light to pass through, resulting in sharper vision, better contrast and a generally clearer viewing experience.

  • Reduced glare. MAR coatings are great for reducing visual glare, which can be quite harmful, especially when driving or walking around at night, along with using computer screens or working indoors.

  • Better eye visibility. The coating is a great way maximise eye contact and communication, with reduced reflections allowing for less obscuring of your eyes. This is also great for looking more natural in photos or videos.

  • Reduced eye strain and fatigue. Better light transfer to the eyes with less distractions means your eyes don’t have to work as hard, reducing eye strain, tiredness and headaches – ideal for people who work with screens.

  • Optimised low-light vision. The increase in light transferring through the lenses allows for better vision in low-light conditions, which can be especially useful for nighttime driving.

  • Better scratch resistance. MAR isn’t just about visual support, it’s also about adding a layer of harder physical protection to the lenses. Keeping scratches and abrasions at bay is important for maintaining the lenses for longer.

  • Easy cleaning process. MAR layers can also have hydrophobic and oleophobic properties, for additional water and smudge resistance. This makes your lenses much easier to clean and keep clear in general.

  • UV protection (optional). Some of these coatings can also include additional levels of UV protection.

In essence, MAR coating is a very useful addition to any pair of glasses, helping to maximise clarity of vision and minimise strain on the eyes over extended periods of time. Best of all, a good company like We Will Spec You can offer the coating on any pair for as little as £15!
